Alex Cunningham MP Seeks Answers About Dumped Nuclear Waste

Local MP Alex Cunningham has taken action to get to the bottom of why nuclear waste was dumped at Port Clarence in his constituency.

Alex has written to the Secretary of State for Defence and the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs asking for any information they can provide about the issue which has caused widespread anger on Teesside.

Alex has received a letter from the Chief Executive of Augean who operate the site in which he has outlined details of the waste which is said to be safe. Alex has also welcomed a commitment from the Environment Agency who have agreed to his request to inspect the site to ensure the company are complying with their licence and to reassure local people.

Alex said:

“I was horrified to learn that nuclear waste has been dumped in my constituency, so close to people’s homes.”

“I have written to the relevant Government Departments seeking reassurances that there is no risk posed to public health. I want there to be an enquiry into how this waste has ended up in the North East.”

“My constituents are very worried and want to know why they were not consulted about nuclear waste being dumped near their homes. I want to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible.”
