Alex MP calls on the Government to stop the caravan tax

Stockton North MP Alex Cunningham today called for a planned tax on caravans to be scrapped.  Alex signed a petition that demands that the Tory-led Government reverse their decision to levy VAT on static holiday caravans, and is strongly encouraging others to follow suit.

Many Stockton North residents would be affected by the Government’s proposals.  The constituency has a high number of static caravan owners, with several established and developing static caravan sites being located in the surrounding area, such as Drovers Way Holiday Caravan Park in Elton.

The proposed tax hike would also be likely to have a negative impact on the wider economy, potentially leading to job losses in the manufacturing sector at a time when economic recovery is a priority concern while also hitting the UK holiday industry.

Alex said:

“The proposed tax would see a significant jump in the costs associated with owning a static caravan.  The impact is likely to be that fewer people buy static caravans, with the possibility of job losses in manufacturing.  With lower sales and a smaller workforce, this tax would end up costing the Government to implement.

“The proposals are senseless, and I will do everything in my power to ensure that a caravan tax is not implemented.  I urge everyone to take a few moments to sign the petition and register their opposition to the Government’s measure.”
