Alex Sticks up for Durham Tees Valley Airport

Alex Cunningham MP, Member of Parliament for Stockton North, used Business, Innovation and Skills Questions to put the case for a renewed Government commitment to Durham Tees Valley airport – and got a positive response.

The Airport, which had been passed over during the allocation of the Government’s Regional Growth Fund, needs renewed investment to ensure it fulfils its potential as a driver of economic growth and prosperity across the region.

Alex asked Vince Cable, the Secretary of State for Business and Innovation and Skills, to follow through on his offer to meet representatives of the airport to find a solution that will allow the airport to be sustained into the future.

The Business Secretary indicated that the Department was analysing the case that Alex and Phil Wilson, the neighbouring MP for Sedgefield, had presented to him on the link between regional airports and economic growth.

Alex MP said:

“I was very disappointed by the failure of Durham Tees Valley Airport’s Regional Growth Fund bid, so it was good to get the chance to follow up on my meeting with the Business Secretary in the House of Commons this week.

“He is well aware of the case for Durham Tees Valley Airport and hopefully we will hear some good news coming out of the Department in the coming weeks.

“Hopefully the Government will match their good words with deeds, and I look forward to hearing more from them on this issue, which is of enormous importance for the region”.
