Stockton North MP hits out at Government unemployment record

Commenting on today’s huge rise in unemployment which has rocketed in the North East, Stockton North Labour MP Alex Cunningham said:

“The news today that unemployment has soared by 70,000 demonstrates that the Government’s plans for growth and jobs lie in tatters.  It also shows that the Tories have all but walked away from the North East.  Despite it being the smallest Region in the country, more than 17% of the people who have lost their jobs – some 12,000 – are from our area.

“This week we are debating the Finance Bill which will see the George Osborne’s budget plans implemented – all the more reason why I’ll be on my feet in the Commons on Thursday demanding action to create jobs and arrest the deterioration in living standards for our people.

“It just can’t be fair that when unemployment is on the way up and people are feeling the pinch this Government is slashing tax credits and child benefit but giving millionaires a tax cut.  What we need is the reinstatement of the bankers’ bonus and a mansion tax to help fund jobs and get our people back into productive work.”
