Alex supports Electrical Safety First campaign

Stockton North MP, Alex Cunningham, has joined forces with leading safety charity, Electrical Safety First, to help protect constituents in their homes.

Electricity causes half of all fires in home in England, with white goods such as dishwashers, tumble dryers, and fridge freezers, being the leading causes of household fires. In 2016, white goods were the cause of almost 2,000 fires – the equivalent of over 5 fires a day. Electrical Safety First is calling on the Government to establish a package of measures to reduce electrical fires through the introduction of five-yearly electrical checks in privately rented homes.

Alex said:

The recent tragic events at Grenfell Tower have made everyone much more aware of the risks from electrical products, and has highlighted the fact that we need more action from the Government to protect people in their homes. That’s why I’m supporting this extremely important campaign.

The charity has developed a range of resources which can be found on their website: https://www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk/guides-and-advice/around-the-home/. This includes a mobile phone app which provides a quick visual check of the electrics in a home, plus a link to find a registered electrician in Stockton North.
