Alex supports RLSS UK’s Drowning Prevention Week

With the River Tees and a long coastal strip alongside his Stockton North constituency, Alex Cunningham MP is backing the Royal Life Saving Society UK’s Drowning Prevention Week, to raise awareness on how to stay safe in and around water.

Drowning Prevention Week, created by the RLSS UK will see a deluge of water safety activity flood the UK and Ireland from 14-24 June 2019. The national campaign aims to ensure everyone knows how to have fun and stay safe near water. This year, the RLSS UK has teamed up with the Department for Education to encourage primary schools across England to support the campaign, More than 700 people drown in the UK and Ireland every year – one every 10 hours – and many more suffer injury when they survive drowning, sometimes of a lifechanging nature.

It’s so important to remind people to stay safe near water, especially at this high-risk time of year. Drowning Prevention Week is a really important campaign and one I’m more than happy to support.

Most people are surprised to learn that you are more likely to die from drowning than you are from being hit by a car or in a fire. We urge as many people as possible to learn what could be potentially lifesaving skills. We thank Alex Cunningham MP for supporting the campaign, and for helping people learn the skills they need to stay safe and enjoy the water.
