Stockton North MP, Alex Cunningham has joined with Cancer Research UK in calling for the next Prime Minister to commit to a fully-funded plan for the cancer workforce that will address the shortages in our NHS right now, as well as planning for the future with cancer patients at its heart.
Alex’s call comes after the Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees CCG reported that around 1,700 cancer diagnoses are made in the Stockton and Hartlepool area every year. Cancer Research UK’s Cancer Awareness Roadshow, which is touring around the country, is focusing on the importance of early detection.
The Government has made a commitment to diagnose 75% of cancer cases in England at stage one and two by 2028, but to reach this Cancer Research argue the NHS needs a long-term plan to deliver crucial tests and treatments people need.

Early detection of cancer can save lives, so it was great to meet the roadshow team at Cancer Research UK and learn more about spotting cancer early.
We will soon have a new Prime Minister in place, and they need to put improving cancer survival rates at the top of their to-do list. We simply do not have enough key NHS cancer staff in post to diagnose and treat cancer soon enough, and our next PM must address this urgently.
