Tories don’t give a damn about local people, says Alex, as unemployment figure rise

People in Stockton North are being failed by a Tory Government that simply doesn’t care about them, says MP Alex Cunningham, who has blasted the Conservative Government’s economic record after it emerged that 2,980 people in Stockton North are unemployed – an increase of 745 compared to August 2018.

This equates to 7% of all economically active people in the constituency aged 16-64 against a national average of 3.7%.

There are also 630 18-24 years olds not in education, employment or training in Stockton North – an increase of 165 from last year.

Responding to these figures, Alex said

That the unemployment figures in Stockton North continues to leap upwards month after month is a shocking indictment of a Tory Government that simply does not give a damn whether people in my constituency are in work or not.

There are people who can work – many of them at the start of their adult working life – unable to find work, and pushed onto Universal Credit. This is not good enough, and it is clear we need a Government that has an actual plan to get people into employment or training.
