Alex responds to SBC’s Levelling Up Fund bid for Billingham Town Centre

Responding to Stockton Borough Council’s plans to take back control of Billingham Town Centre, Alex said:

“Over the years the Labour-led Stockton Borough Council has taken an active role in revitalising our town centres and has been held up nationally as an example of best practice. This has most recently been seen in the Council’s plans to re-develop Stockton Town Centre, which gained national recognition for its scale of ambition. I’m delighted now to see the Council unveil a plan for taking control of Billingham Town Centre, re-develop it for the twenty-first century, and seek funding from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund.

“This plan, which I fully support, will tackle changes in shopping trends and support local businesses in an ever evolving retail environment. The plan will also address the physical condition of Billingham Town Centre which I know is important to local people, and give the Council more control over this. I will be writing to the Minister adding my support for this plan.

“It is bold and ambitious and I hope the Government looks favourably at what the Labour-led Council is seeking to achieve, and award it funding through its Levelling Up Fund.”
