Alex welcomes removal of controversial traffic calming measures on The Wynd after campaigning for meaningful local consultation

Stockton North MP Alex Cunningham has welcomed news that controversial traffic calming measures on The Wynd, Wynyard, will be removed by Stockton Borough Council following his campaign for meaningful local consultation.

After meeting with the local Wyndsafety group to hear their concerns about the chicanes on The Wynd and see them for himself, Alex wrote to the Council asking for further consultation with local people in the area. The Council agreed to this request and consultation was carried out between 25 June and 26 July.

Now, after 78 per cent of respondents told the Council they wanted the chicanes removed the local authority has announced that they will be taken out from 27 September subject to approvals.

Alex said:

“I’m delighted that, after calling on the Council to carry out meaningful consultation, the local authority has done just that and will remove the controversial traffic calming measures as local people have requested.

“Local people and the Wyndsafety group are not against traffic calming, far from it, but they were concerned that the measures put in place did more harm than good. That’s why I called on the Council to look at the matter again and explore alternative solutions.

“This is a great result and I hope now the Council, Wyndsafety and local residents can get round the table and look at alternative traffic calming measures on this stretch of road.”
