Stockton North MP, Alex Cunningham, has welcomed news that the Vane Arms – which closed its doors in 2019 – will not be turned into housing after Stockton Council’s Planning Committee rejected development proposals.
The plans to convert the pub and add housing to the back was opposed by more than 100 people, including Alex. Alex had previously backed the “Save the Vane” campaign group in their successful campaign to get the pub listed as an “asset of community value” last year.
Alex said:
“The closure of the Vane Arms in 2019 resulted in Long Newton losing a vital community asset – turning it into housing would have seen it disappear forever, and with it any chance to revive it as a hub for local people. That’s why I’m delighted the Planning Committee of Stockton Council sided with the local community and rejected the developers plans for housing on the site.
“The Vane Arms has always been more than just a pub but a centre of the community and a place for people to meet friends and enjoy company. I am one hundred per cent behind the community in their plans to keep the pub and find a way to bring it back into use. My door is always open to the group for support going forward.”
