‘Still hope for a supermarket and jobs in Billingham’- Alex MP

The hard work to secure a new supermarket for Billingham Town Centre is continuing apace with talks between the town centre owners Stocklands and Aldi.

Worried that prospects of a new store had stalled, Alex Cunningham, MP for Stockton North, contacted Aldi and was pleased to hear talks were still going on and there could soon be some good news for Billingham people who have been demanding better shops for years.

Planning permission has been granted for a store to be opened opposite the Forum with a frontage onto The Causeway but the project suffered a setback as Aldi felt there was a lack of available convenient car parking.

Alex now hopes that an agreement will be reached swiftly which will deliver a good local food store for local people in Billingham.

He said:

“I am encouraged that negotiations with Aldi and the developers in Billingham are still taking place and hope they will be successful in bringing much needed jobs to the area, provide a wider choice to local shoppers and help accelerate the development of the town centre.”
